Calacatta Bianco meets durability goals in modern home

One of the clear favourites in the new Sintered Collection, Smartstone Calacatta Bianco delivers durable and stunning benchtops and splashbacks for the kitchen, pantry and laundry in this modern home in Freshwater, NSW.

In the project brief, the homeowners specified a design that would incorporate sustainable and timber elements with emphasis on durability of materials.

“Clients wanted to use sustainable timber-coloured elements in the design plus a robust stone for their benchtops and splashbacks. We recommended Polytec and Smartstone for their sustainability,” said Matt Wearne of Northern Beaches Kitchens.

Calacatta Bianco did not only meet aesthetic and sustainable requirements but also ensures the benchtop and splashback materials are highly durable and robust.  UV-stable and suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, surfaces in the Sintered Collection deliver superior durability, advanced manufacturing capabilities and enhanced natural-stone aesthetics that meet the demands of Australian home renovators.

Smartstone’s sintered stone surfaces rank 7 on Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness, 10 being the hardest (diamond), making it highly resistant to scratches, staining, etching, heat, frost and chemicals.

Every element was chosen based on the design brief and for a specific, practical reason.

Matt added, “Smartstone’s new sintered range was a new material that the clients loved and appreciated the durability.”

Adopting an open modern design, the home features a functional kitchen with a double sink for convenience and a power track on the splashback for flexibility, highlighted by a show-stopping island with beautiful waterfalls on both ends and ample overhang for bar dining.

With through body veining feature of the Smartstone’s surfaces, the Calacatta Bianco benchtop return (or reverse side of the slab) is exposed to show through-body vein patterns that can be achieved by polishing the stone coupled with impeccable joinery and craftmanship.

Through-body veining is a unique attribute of the Sintered Collection that sets it apart from traditional porcelain surfaces. This new level of textural beauty becomes an important design feature in benchtops with exposed edges, such as arris or pencil round edge profiles and applications such as waterfall edges and undermount sinks.

A boldly luxurious marble-style surface, Calacatta Bianco precisely recreates rare Calacatta marble from Carrara, Italy characterised by fluid strong-to-fine grey veins on a milk-white backdrop. Now available and in stock, Calacatta Bianco is one of 22 sintered stone surfaces in the new, government-compliant Sintered Collection.

A team of specialist kitchen designers and cabinetmakers, Northern Beaches Kitchens designed and provided custom joinery to create the beautiful, practical, and functional kitchen and pantry. In addition to the design, Northern Beaches Kitchens carried out work that included wall removals and installations, structural elements, floor tiling, joinery, plumbing, electrical, and painting.
